Update on Capital Returns

If you have been following my blog at all, you may have heard about the Capital Returns Campaign that I have discussed relatively intensively.

I just wanted to give you an idea of what is going on. Monday, Jan 28th the United Steelworkers went to Capital Returns with enough signatures to file for voluntary recognition of a union and after the company refused to grant recognition, the Steelworkers went to the National Labor Relations Board to file for elections.

With that said, the workers of Capital Returns will have the chance to ultimately decide if they wish to have a union will be held in the beginning of March. Before that however, the company is going to do everything in their power to make sure that the workers are intimidated and scared enough to vote against the union.

That's where you come in! On Feb 20th, 2008 at 3:00pm at Capital Returns (6101 N 64th St) we will be having a mass rally to show that we all support the struggle of the workers at Capital Returns.

The company will be doing their part to intimidate the workers, do your part to show the workers how much this community supports these workers!

Jon,

I ran into your name was reading something asinine that was written on the blog of Dad29. I like your blog. It's always nice to know that there are some sane people that have a blog here in the Milwaukee area. It's very refreshing.

If you think unionizing Capital Returns is about anything but the Steelworkers growing their pocketbook you're a fool. The claims of unsafe working conditions are an outright lie, as are the claims of union busting. It is true a Steelworker planted employee was fired for rabble-rousing, but that's about it. The employee was running around making a bunch of nonsense promises and stirring up trouble. The USW posponed the vote because they knew they didn't have the votes required to win. And the threats of closing the plant? Weren't threats. Telling an employee that should labor costs rise to an unreasonable level as a result of unionization that the plant will close or move... is not a threat. It is merely informing them of the business impact of unionization. Capital Returns is more than generous with their workers. There is a company sponsored picnic every year. The workers are paid generous bonuses for meeting goals. They are also offered affordable health care options, though many employees turn it down in favor of Badgercare. For completely unskilled labor the workers are paid a pretty decent wage (around double minimum wage). Capital Returns has also CHOSEN to locate itself in an area convenient for many of these workers. It is easily within walking distance for many of them. As far as other union busting activity? Like forcing the employees to attend sessions on the downsides of unionization? Absolutely. But this is part of the Democratic process is it not? Why shouldn't representatives for the company be allowed to present their side of the story? There are downsides to unionization, even though nobody likes to talk about them.
